History

Houston was founded on August 30, 1836, by brothers Augustus and John Allen, who purchased 6,642 acres along Buffalo and White Oak bayous. Named after General Sam Houston, the city served as the capital of the Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1839. Initially operating as a trading post, the city’s early economy relied heavily on cotton exports and regional commerce. In 1914, the transformation of Buffalo Bayou into the man-made Houston Ship Channel fundamentally altered its trajectory, linking the city to the Gulf of Mexico and establishing Houston as a major global port.
The discovery of the Spindletop oil field in 1901 propelled Houston to the center of the petroleum industry. Throughout the 20th century, the city grew into the “Energy Capital of the World,” attracting hundreds of major corporate headquarters and fueling massive urban expansion.
Houston cemented its reputation for innovation in the mid-to-late 20th century. Established in 1961, the NASA Johnson Space Center made Houston the hub of American human spaceflight, permanently tying the city to the historic 1969 Apollo lunar landing.
